Following the success of Subsea Innovations’ recent mechanical grip testing, we began the next phase of our Pipe-in-Pipe (PIP) Waterstop development programme focused on an improved sealing mechanism.
Utilising 3D printing technology and FEA analysis, we created a range of seal profile cross sections to increase our understanding of how a seal compresses when pulled into a PIP system.
A seal profile was selected using this information, and further analysis was carried out to determine the physical size and material properties of a revised seal to be used in full-scale testing. Successful pressure testing was then completed in both unheated and heated tests.
The lessons learnt from this process have been implemented into Subsea Innovations’ Waterstop design process to offer a robust PIP Waterstop solution that can be used on both seamless and welded pipe and is suitable for an array of client requirements.
